Here goes with my first film review (a new career perhaps? Perhaps not!). I went to see this film against my better judgement after having seen the fairly appalling trailer a couple of times where Nicole Kidman is telling a story in a strange stilted accent to a young boy. I was fairly blown away and on two occasions close to tears. This of course could easily be attributed to being told that it was a "true story" as I am always a glutton for watching those with an empathetic slant. Hugh Jackman was Phwoooooooooar and it was lust at the first sight of his naked torso.
Beautifully shot (was that because we saw the Digital version) and a thought provoking story. I am off to put Rabbit Proof Fence on my LoveFilm wishlist now. Hugh Jackman was excellently cast. I don't think I would have bothered to see it if Russell Crowe had taken the part of Drover. Heath Ledger was also supposed to be in line for the role but I feel that Jackman bought a sense of macho sexiness to the role that unfortunately would have been lacking with the other two prospectives. The boy that played Nullah was amazing - hard to believe that it was his first ever film.
There was a great scene where Sarah tries to teach Drover to foxtrot. She comes out with a line very similar to the bloody awful Chanel advert where she says "I'm a dancer, I love to dance". Of course Australia and the chuff awful Chanel ad were both directed/produced/written by Baz Luhrman.
Anway, great film, good acting (how I loathed that Fletcher guy), gets you thinking (even after Googling to find that it wasn't actually based on a true story) about how people are treated rather shittily and gets me Googling for naked torso photos of the lovely Hugh for my Hello Boys Wall.
Next film review will be of Slumdog Millionaire. Loved the book, I wonder how the film will translate it.
